Lacrosse Training Lacrosse Training aims to reach as many underserved youth as possible. This goal is currently met with weekly clinics striving to raise awareness of the sport in the short term, and, over the long term, forming teams within the Philadelphia United Lacrosse League (PULL) created by L.E.A.P.S. This grassroots approach is open to varied participants, drawn from recreation centers, special interest groups, school assemblies, and school PE classes.
Lacrosse Teams - PULL In early 2009, L.E.A.P.S. created PULL by piloting three programs. L.E.A.P.S. will continue to grow the Philadelphia United Lacrosse League (PULL) beyond these three pilot programs. It is our hope that by targeting neighborhoods with established youth athletic organizations, we will be able to grow L.E.A.P.S. in settings where we have the most opportunity for success. Throughout the fall, L.E.A.P.S. will facilitate information sessions and registration at each venue. To avoid overlap with existing athletic programs, the Fall PULL program will be limited to sporadic, small group sessions and clinics within 4-8 targeted communities. The result will be regular weekly programs in the spring at each venue. These programs will not only include lacrosse instruction but also positive nutrition messages. The teams will receive equipment, uniforms, and coaching stipends.
L.E.A.P.S. Program (Lacrosse, Nutrition, Academics) The L.E.A.P.S. Winter and Summer Academies consist of invitation-only sessions that will take place at specific facilities, weekly. The youth eligible to attend will be selected based on lacrosse and academic criteria, and will be comprised of both middle school and high school students. High school participants will receive the same guidance as the middle school participants; in addition, they will be required to mentor the younger participants. L.E.A.P.S. will provide transportation, snacks, a pilot nutrition education program, a pilot homework assistance program, and lacrosse instruction. L.E.A.P.S. will also provide free summer camps citywide, in conjunction with the School District of Philadelphia, to raise the awareness of the sport. The camps are open to any child, age 6-14.
